Smart2go Nokia Maps review

Nokia Smart2go map application is finally available. There were some network server problems after the launch, but now it can be downloaded for free. The application is still in beta phase.

I downloaded the application to my computer and installed it over a Bluetooth connection. The installation took over ten minutes. The first start-up was also slow taking several minutes. After that the application starts up like any other S60 program.

Map coverage

The application includes maps for over 100 countries. Baltic countries are also included, which is not true with most car navigation devices. Turn-by-turn navigation support is provided for 30 countries. A detailed list about supported countries and languages can be found from Smart2go web pages. The basic installation takes 5 MB from the memory card. The memory consumption can be limited from the program settings.

Usage

Smart2go Nokia Maps reviewThe destinations can be searched using address, name and class. The application cannot fill in the rest of the address details, so you have to type full street names, etc. There is a setting if you travel by foot or by car. Smart2go finds the fastest and shortest routes. It can avoid high ways, tunnels, road tolls and ferries if needed.

Smart2go can give voice guidance when navigating. The voice commands are downloaded when enabled. They are not included in the basic installation package.

The maps can be zoomed with * and # keys. View can be 2D or 3D. The operation is somewhat slow on Nokia N80 phone. This makes the application useless for car navigation. The software usage takes too much time and you cannot concentrate on driving. The slow response does not bother so much when walking around a town.

Searching the routes requires quite often a network connection. Otherwise Smart2go does not find any routes. The application does not store the routes found from the network to a phone memory. Searching the same routes requires every time a network connection. The routes can be browsed as a list with destinations between the turns. The routes can be simulated, but there are some bugs and the simulation does not always execute. The simulation does not require the navigation license.

City guides

There are city guides to purchase from several publishers. Most of the 23 guides were from European destinations. Publishers like AA, Berlitz, City Vox, Herold, Insight Guides, Polyglott Travel guide, Smart Traveling, and WCities Guide provide guides for Smart2go. They can be purchased directly from the application. However, Smart2go cannot tell the price.

Excellent city map

Smart2go is too sluggish for car navigation. Beta status means that there are some minor glitches in the program. Let’s hope that these glitches can be tuned out from the final release. Still Smart2go is an excellent help when walking and searching interesting places around the world. There’s no need to use paper maps and look like a tourist in town, since Smart2go is always in my pocket.

Kalajärvi, Peräseinäjoki

Kalajärvi camping area is a SF-Caravan member site (Finnish Caravan Association). There are different parking places to choose from if you like grass or gravel. Some of the places are in the woods.

There was a friendly host when we arrived at Kalajärvi. We got a short overview of the site and an adapter for the electric sockets. It was nice, since we forgot our own adapter back home. The old “suko” style sockets were in use. The electric supplies were right next to the parking places, so there was no need for long cables.

The site offered an attractive living environment for the weekend. The facilities in the service building were clean and functional. The sauna and shower were good. There was also nice looking beach, but the cold weather did not encourage us to go swimming. There were a lot of paths in the nearby forest, so walking the dog was a treat.

The price was cheap – only 12 euros for two persons per day with electricity. That did not include electric heating. We did not find anything to complain about Kalajärvi. The staff was friendly and the area was beautiful and the price was cheap. Kalajärvi is very crowded during the busy season in July. We will definitely visit there again.

Sappee, Pälkäne

Sappee is a skiing resort located in Pälkäne. Pälkäne is then located 50 kilometers from Tampere. It takes approximately 40 minutes to drive from Tampere to Sappee. There are ten slopes and seven lifts. The maximum vertical drop is 120 meters. There are also super pipe and snow park. Sappee has a caravan area, which is quite popular during the schools’ skiing holidays. There are 300 places for caravans. You can book your place before hand.

Caravan place for one day is 24 euros without electricity. The basic services like bathroom, sauna and a place for washing dishes is included. The electricity is 0.18 euros per kWh. You don’t have to have your own electricity meter. The resort takes care of the metering. One day skiing ticket is 30 euros.

The service facilities are good and new. The Sappee restaurant has a lot of evening program and famous Finnish artists perform there. There’s nothing right next to Sappee, since the resort is located in the middle of the forest. If you enjoy the quiet beauty of the Finnish nature then Sappee is a good place to stay.

Kuus-Hukkala, Rantasalmi Camping

Kuus-Hukkala’s camping area is a SF-Caravan member site (Finnish Caravan Association). The area was somewhat under construction during our visit in the summer 2006. The motorhome parking places were not clearly marked and the installation of new electric supplies were under work. That was a small harm we didn’t even notice once we were settled.

The restaurant service was good. There was a possibility to order ready made breakfast for the next morning. That was a nice touch of luxury. The grocery store offered enough variety to fill our fridge.

Kuus-Hukkala, Rantasalmi Camping restaurantThere were a lot of activities to spent some time. A grill cottage, a sauna and a smoke sauna facilities were good. We did not try the 4-wheel drive off-road track. There was a miniature golf course, a sand box and swings for children. Swimming, rowing a boat and fishing was possible in the nearby lake Kolkonjärvi.

The charge for one night was 11 euros and the electricity excluding heating was 2 euros. That’s cheap compared to the beautiful scenery and the cozy atmosphere the area offered.

Poroholma, Rauma Western Finland

Poroholma’s camping area is located in Rauma. Rauma is a small town located in the Western Finland. The camping area is only a few kilometers away from the down town. The place is a beautiful grass field on the sea coast. Our caravan was parked only five meters from the sea.

We visited Poroholma during a weekend in July and the place was crowded. July is the busy season in Finland. We needed 15 meters of cable to get the electricity. The electric sockets were old suko style sockets that are commonly used with consumer electronic devices in Finland.

There is a boat harbour next to the camping area and the road to the harbour goes through the area. The traffic caused some noise also in the middle of the night. So if your sleep is distracted easily you should pick your parking place far from the road. The service building, showers and the sauna were OK, but needed some renovation.

There were no good places to walk the dog. It was best to go walking outside the camping area. The beach did not occupy the whole coastline, so our dogs were allowed to swim in the sea. However, there’s no official swimming place marked for the dogs.

The pricing was reasonable and the scenery was beautiful. The two set backs were the traffic and worn facilities.

Keskinen, Tuuri

Keskinen is famous and the biggest Village Shop in Finland. It’s located in a small village called Tuuri. There are only 500 inhabitants who are most often outnumbered by the tourists. Keskinen has a camping area called Onnela. There are 131 parking places with electricity and 98 without electricity. The places are wide and well paved, which makes parking very easy. The parking place cannot be reserved in advance.

Keskinen entrance

We stayed one night at Onnela during the weekend in autumn 2006. The camping area was very popular and it was crowded. There was a queue of motorhomes and caravans waiting for free spaces. All the parking places are numbered so you don’t lose your space even if you take your motorhome to go out from the camping area.

There are showers, sauna, larger sauna for big groups, grill cottage, beach and good facilities to empty the toilet waste tank and waste water tanks. Dog park offers a possibility to leave your pet outside while you are shopping.

One night with the electricity was 10 euros. Without the electricity the charge is 5 euros. We considered that affordable. Children playground was under construction. The area was nice and we enjoyed our stay there.

Spa, Ikaalinen

Ikaalinen is a small town located in Western Finland. The population is 8000 and its a traditional spa town. There is no real camping site in Ikaalinen. However, there is a possibility to stay over night in the parking lot of the spa. The spa provided us electricity and charged 8,4 euros. The parking lot was surprisingly quiet at night so we slept well.

There are around 30 places for motorhomes and caravans. These places might be crowded during the day by normal passenger cars. The key needed to get the electricity can be picked up from the reception of the spa hotel.

The place does not offer any other service than electricity. The charge is cheap, so it’s a good place to stay one night when visiting the spa and Ikaalinen.
