Seljes Camping, Alaveteli Finland

Seljes restaurant

Seljes Camping is located in Western Finland in a small village called Alaveteli. It is approximately 30 km to South-East from Kokkola. The last two kilometers of the road to the area are narrow and the road travels between two lakes on a ridge. There are wider places in every couple of hundred meters to pass by other caravanners.

Seljes area is next to lake Seljes and the scenery with tall pinewoods is absolutely wonderful. There are only 40 pitches for caravans and motorhomes. All pitches have electricity with traditional schuko sockets. Fuses are rated as 16 Amps, so there’s no problem to use air conditioning. Receiving a TV-signal is very easy. I managed to get 100% signal strength and quality even without lifting the antenna at all.

Seljes

There are 26 cabins for accommodation. The old football field provides plenty of space for tents. The restaurant has 150 seats. I did not have time to try out the menu, which is said to be delicious. I arrived Sunday night and left Monday morning.

Showers and toilets were pretty basic, but they were clean and thus a joy to use. The kitchen has some plates for dining and also washing machine for clothes. There is a water hose to fill up the clear water tank near the entry to the area.

The place to empty toilet waste tank is very rudimentary, but it is still functional. There is an open pit and a water hose at the back of the ware house.

Seljes

Seljes was a very calm and quiet area during my stay. There were people staying at the cabins and tents, but there was only one motorhome excluding mine. There were a large group of French tourists, so the atmosphere was quite international. The best things about Seljes are the gorgeous scenery and the lake. You can rent a rowing boat and go to fishing to Perho river (Perhojoki).

One night was 18 euros for caravans and motorhomes. It includes electricity, showers, toilets, and kitchen.

I have prepared a video clip showing the site. The commentary is currently only available in Finnish.

Carado 2009 models

Carado production was started in December 2006. More than 2000 Carados have been produced by the end of August 2008. One third has been caravans and two thirds motor homes. There are 170 emplyees working on the production line in Neustadt, which is near Dresden. Carado has published their 2009 range, which includes 16 models. There are 8 caravans, three alcove motorhomes, and 5 semi-integrated motorhomes.

Caravans

There are two new layouts. C 100 is a compact caravan with a curved seating are at the front. The seats can be converted into beds. The body length is 413 cm and total weight is 1350 kg. Starting price is 11590 euros in Germany.

Carado C100

The C 364 has a bunk bed in the back and a bed across the front area. The body length is 557 cm and total weight is 1600 kg. Starting price is 13490 euros in Germany.

Carado C 364

The caravans have 34 thick walls and 41 mm thick floors. The chassis is fully galvanized in every model. Payload range is 300 to 470 kg depending on the model. The furniture uses slightly darker Canadian walnut finish. Thetford toilet has a direct water supply with a generous 45 litre tank.

Motorhomes

The alcove motorhomes have one new layout A 361. It combines a bunk bed with dinette and an optional large refrigerator. The base is a rear wheel drive Ford as all the alcove models have. The basic engine is 85 kW (115 hp) 2.4-litre TDCI. 140 hp engine is available as an option. The length is 695 cm, width is 230 cm and height is 315 cm. The total weight is 3500 kg, but it can be raised to 3850 kg. Starting price is 39290 euros in Germany.

Carado A 361

T 134 is a new semi-integrated model that introduces the very popular “Van type” layout. The vehicle is under 6 meters in length has a raised rear bed with wardrobe under it and semi-dinette. The base is front wheel drive Ford as all the semi-integrated models have. The basic engine is 81 kW (110 hp) 2.2-litre TDCI. 140 hp engine is available as an option. Starting price is 35190 euros in Germany.

Carado T 134

The interior of the motorhomes have generally 34 mm thick walls and 42 mm thick floors. Smooth outside plate is available as an option. The interior design uses slightly darker Canadian walnut finish. The upholstery has two new choices of microfibre/leather-look versions.

Hymer 2009 line-up

Hymer has released news about their new motor home and caravan range. There are two motor home debuts: HymerCar 312 and HymerLiner. Also the caravan range has two debuts: HymerSporting and HymerFeeling.

HymerCar 312 is a van designed for every day use. It is half a meter shorter than HymerCar 322. The bed is easier to access as it is lower. HymerLiner is extending the higher end of the line-up. It is based on Iveco chassis with 6.0 and 6.5 ton rating offering high payload and improved towing capacity.

Inverter installation

Carado uses Ford Transit base, so the van battery is installed under the drivers seat. Also the leisure battery is located in the same place. The battery in front is the leisure one. Before I started the installation process I disconnected the leisure battery from the 12 V wiring. This can be done via the rocker switch found from the Electroblock unit. It is located under the passenger’s seat.

Leisure and van battery

The driver’s seat was easy to remove with the rotating base. There were 4 torx screws and one regular bolt. The front right corner of the rotating base had the bolt. Other corners had torx screws. I did not find any reason why there was the bolt in one corner.

Place for the inverter

I need the inverter produced electricity near the table and also inside the wardrobe where I will install an antenna amplifier. I decided that the perfect place for the inverter is under the table. I attached the unit on the narrow and thick wall that is against the cockpit. This location ensures that the inverter is well ventilated and the 12 V supply leads are short.

Nordic Power inverter

Careful cabling

The length of the 12 V supply leads is important due to high currents although the unit is rated only at 300 W. The longer the cable the thicker it must be. I had 8 mm2 cable available from the previous installations that was suitable for this project.

The inverter was supplied with cables of 60 cm in length (approx 24 inches) and they had small clamps. Their thickness was #10 AWG, which equals to 5.3 mm2. The inverter chassis needs a ground cable, which was not included with the unit. The recommended thickness for it is #8 AWG (8.35 mm2).

Making the connections

The leisure battery provided good posts to attach the 12 V supply leads. I used proper ring terminals to get permanent connection. The provided clamps should not be used, since they are not reliable. The inverter chassis needs to be grounded to the Ford’s chassis. The ground cable from the van battery goes under a big torx screw next to the driver’s seat. The leisure battery’s minus terminal is grounded to the van battery’s minus terminal. So the inverter can be grounded under the torx screw or the van battery’s minus terminal as I did.

There is a hole in the side of the battery space with approx. 3 cm diameter (1.5 inches). I used the hole to route the leads out of the battery space. I used cable ties to fix the leads in place under the driver’s seat to get a clean installation and to prevent the leads to rub against any object.

Leads through a hole

Fuse

Although the leads are short it is a good idea to protect the installation with a fuse. 350 W with 12 V voltage and 85 % efficiency gives approximately 34 A current. A suitable fuse is then for example 40 A or 50 A. The inverter has an internal fuse, so this additional fuse protects against malfunction in the inverter itself and damaged 12 V supply leads. A good place for the fuse box is right next to the driver’s seat where the leads are visible. Thus it allows easy fuse change without removing the seat. It is always advisable to place the fuse as close to the battery as possible.

When I connected the supply leads to the inverter first time I saw some sparks. This is normal and is caused by internal capacitors that take in a current surge.
