Winter camping challenges - cold start

Winter camping has some additional challenges and cold start is one of them. The ambient temperature was -22.5 degrees Celsius (-8.5 Fahrenheit) when I tried to start up my Carado. I did not have an electric engine block heater or Webasto or Eber in use. The battery was so cold that it could barely run the start. You can hear how the engine is coughing and lights are blinking. The cold start was a success with a first try. I’m sure the battery could not have survived a second try.

    Hi Tommy

My Carado and my Friends Carado are coming up to 2 years we have only 9000miles about 12000 km on ours and my friends is about 12000miles 15000km.

They have both proved to be excellent vehicles and have given us no trouble at all. The problem with both our vans is cold drafts in the cab area. Have come across this problem with your Carado. When you fitted your carpets how did you get the step that you use to get into Bed to slide over the carpet. In 2009 I my Carado to South of France 40C TEMPS FOR 8 weeks very hot. and the fabric of the van seems excellent.

    All the best Les

    Hi Les,

I have found out that there is some cold draft especially on the driver’s side leg area. When it is cold the Ford’s heating cannot compensate it. The warm air is blown against my right leg on the accelerator pedal. So my right leg stays warm, even too warm while my left leg is freezing. Have you figured out how the cold draft could be eliminated?

40C! That’s hot! Air condition would be nice for those temperatures. I’m also very pleased with my Carado. There are some issues like the draft, but overall the quality per price ratio is really good.

I’m posting a short series on winter camping challengies. This is not to point Carado’s faults, but more like illustrating what challengies there are with any motorhome or caravan not specifically tailored for cold climates. This winter has been really fierce. There are tons of snow everywhere and it’s cold every day.
